New Maps of Restenford

1. Map of Monmouth, NJ by John Speed.
Years ago, I posted a selection of maps of Restenford that I'd
scrounged from various internet sources. Recently, a budding young cartographer named R.R. Calbick sent me a map of R'ford that he rendered up, modeled after the work of John Speed who, back in the day, made those cool old-timey maps with the buildings rendered into 'em that we all know and love. See figure 1.

Anyway, Mr. Calbick rendered up Restenford for us in a similar style over three separate maps including the original Restenford, a somewhat streamlined Restenford that has suffered the destruction of several buildings, and, in the third map, we see that someone in Restenford finally dips into the treasury to beef up security with improved guard stations, a wall surrounding the north side of the village and, finally, an adequate lighthouse so that the poor gnome can finally ply his trade with his head held high.

2. Antebellum Restenford, by R.R. Calbick

3. Post Antebellum Restenford, by R.R. Calbick. Note the expanded graveyard.

4. Apres post antebellum Restenford by R.R. Calbick
A point of further interest: these maps were sent to me by a one Lenard Lakofka. Yes, that's right, the inspiration for this here blog has finally tracked me down and, rather than slapping me with a cease and desist order or going full-Welcar on me and releasing the hounds, he hooked me up with Mr. Calbick and his awesome maps! Furthermore, he's also provided some other cool resources as well, which I'll get to in a later post. For now enjoy the visual treat of Restenford cartography.

Lenard is a trove of information and history about the Lendore campaign, as well as the rest of Greyhawk! :D

The new maps are great. As a DM I envisioned the #32 Abandoned guard station burning accidentally (Jamestown burned at least four times that we know of) and being subsequently left to ruin. Its original purpose, to watch the southern approaches of the town being somewhat taken by the Lighthouse and palisade.

The maps remind me of something I wanted to bring up. Notice that there are four (4) taverns in this small town of just over 300 people. The farmers and fishermen can't have that much free time; this suggests that a) there is more trade in the form of ships coming and going from other islands or the continent or b) merchants/caravans regularly arrive from elsewhere like Lake Farmin err, Garroten. Ahem.
Think about it-the Village of Hommlet has but a single inn, the Inn of the Welcome Wench. B2 Keep on the Borderlands-one Inn/tavern. N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God? Two taverns (Golden Grain Inn and Inn of the Slumbering Serpent) and a defunct Inn (The Foaming Mug Inn).
And Orlane is supported by formerly regular merchant caravans.
Just a thought.

Your point is well taken; especially considering that Resty does not appear to be at a crossroads or otherwise conveniently located for overland travel and doesn't provide much of a harbor for maritime activity either. That said, I only count three (3) tavern: Falco's "Vienna Calling" Tavern, The Decrepit Minotaur, and the West Winds. Am I missing something?

You are definitely not missing anything good sir; it is a sign of my eroding mental faculties.
There are in fact three (3); two are listed as taverns including Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus" Tavern and another is listed as an Inn for a total of three. You are correct. Three not four. Mea Culpa.
Still a bit...odd. Ships must dock in Restenford with some frequency to support that many taverns/inns. Also note the taverns have rooms to rent...as well as the Inn.

On a somewhat related note, the Illusionist gnome in the Lighthouse (Eleagnome Rigby?) in L1. Now thanks to the work of the Len Lakofka Archive,we have a new module called...The Lighthouse. Coincidence? Did L 1 and the gnome inspire it or vice versa? Or merely simple coincidence?

If only Falco had a third memorable song then he might have opened another tavern in Restenford and your initial pub count would have been correct.

Is this Lighthouse module worth looking into?
Also, the entirety of my blogging career rests on the notion that, when it comes to D&D, there are no coincidences.

In my view, yes, The LightHouse is very Lakofka-esque and has some of the quirks and the love of detail that made L 1 so great. Free download, good read. I don't believe you'll regret it.

Quite correct in my view sir. "Jenny" as a tavern probably wouldn't work....although this is Lendore Isle.

Correction: Make that "Jeanny" from Falco. Mea Culpa. Haven't heard the song in years.

Correction: Make that Falco's "Jeanny." Mea culpa.
